Introduction to Jesus College

Jesus College is located in the centre of Cambridge, backing onto Jesus Green and a stones throw from the River Cam. The College boasts the oldest buildings in Cambridge, dating from Norman times, due to its location on the site of a Benedictine nunnery. Many are surprised that such a peaceful haven exists in the heart of Cambridge, but the extensive grounds and gardens surrounding the College buildings protect it from the noise and bustle of the town, whilst providing a beautiful setting for events and plentiful parking.

In the time of St. Radegund's nunnery it was the 'aulo' or hall for the lodging of the nuns' guests. Now this is a beautifully presented oak-beamed room, with plenty of natural daylight and some lovely pieces of antique furniture. Ideally suited for private dining or boardroom meetings, it can also be used for theatre style for seminars or training.

The Cloisters is the name given to the quadrangle of covered walkways in the centre of the College. These were the original cloisters of the nunnery whose buildings the College was founded with. They form the heart of the College, with the Chapel, Prioress, Alcock, Cranmer, and Marshall rooms all directly accessible. The Cloisters is beautifully suited for use for drinks receptions or refreshment in the summer. It is also licensed for civil wedding ceremonies. Please note that access to the grass area in the centre of the Cloisters is prohibited by College law.

This spacious room dates back to the foundation of the college by Bishop Alcock. Medieval carvings decorate the crossbeams of the restored roof. Arched windows along each side of the room provide the room with ample natural daylight that adds to the airy and fresh feel of the room. The white washed walls are undecorated except for the mural by Richard Long 'River Avon Mud, 1996'. This hall is on the top level of the college buildings and leads onto the balcony that overlooks the Hall. The Upper Hall is available as a plenary session room for meetings, formal and buffet dining and exhibitions in both term time and during holidays.

History of Jesus College

The College was founded in 1496, and it originally consisted of buildings taken over from the nunnery of St Mary and St Radegund: namely the chapel, and the cloister attached to it; the nuns’ refectory, which became the College hall; and the former lodging of the prioress, which became the Master’s Lodge. This set of buildings remains the core of the College to this day, and this accounts for its distinctly peaceful and spacious character, which sets it apart from all the other Cambridge Colleges.

Why choose
Cambridge?
Our clients say...

"I have booked two conferences/events at Jesus College and were delighted both times with the organisation and service. Any extras or changes were dealt with swiftly and with a smile. Your staff are to be commended. The food was excellent and obviously the venue is second to none. We would not hesitate to come back for future similar conferences. "
