Gonville & Caius was founded in 1348 by Edmund Gonville, Rector of Terrington in Norfolk, and moved to its present site in 1353. Two hundred years later John Caius, a student at Gonville Hall, returned from his doctorate to find his old College in a dilapidated state. Caius set about renovating the Hall and in 1557 he obtained a new charter from Queen Mary and renamed the College Gonville & Caius.
The College buildings date from the 14th to 20th centuries and lie in the centre of Cambridge. The rooms vary greatly in style, but all are comfortable.
